It is with sadness that the family of Harold Whalen announces his sudden passing at the Deer Lake Manor in Deer Lake, NL on Tuesday April 19th, 2016. He was 91 years old. Harold Whalen spent the majority of his life in Flower’s Cove, NL. He served in the merchant navy during the Second World War, and was proud to be a veteran. Harold was involved in many work experiences over the years which included fishing at Cook's Harbour and in Red Bay with the Organ family, hauling mail by dog-team to the coastal villages, and travelling by boat to show movies in these same communities. He loved fishing, boating and cooking, and was fortunate to have worked (and travelled) on some larger vessels too. Later in his life, he ran a general store with his wife in Flower’s Cove. He made many friends during his work and travels.

In keeping with Harold’s wishes, cremation has taken place. He is predeceased by: his parents Lydia (Warren) Whalen and Stephen Whalen; his wife Amelia (Kean) Whalen; and his brother-in-law Ray Hynes. Leaving to mourn: his sister Susie (Whalen) Hynes, her sons and their families; his daughter Marjorie (Kean) Clarke and her husband Philip Clarke; his granddaughter Amelia Clarke and her partner Catherine Bernard; his great-grandson Finnley Clarke; and extended families and friends. Harold spoke often of family and especially liked to brag to anyone who would listen about Amelia, who he referred to as "The Baby" … she was a special person in his life and he in hers. Harold is remembered also for his storytelling--he was never at a loss to entertain with his endless supply of interesting stories.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff and residents at Deer Lake Manor for ensuring his last years were so enjoyable. Also a thank you to the staff at the St. Anthony hospital who helped Harold survive two heart attacks in 2007, and to the staff at the care facilities in St. Anthony and in Flowers Cove; your efforts have given us an extra ten years with our loved one.

The memorial service will take place on 4th June 2016 at 2pm in St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Flower’s Cove, NL; and the burial will follow at the adjacent Anglican cemetery. It was Harold’s wish that we wait until the ground is not frozen. Donations may be made in Harold’s honour to the St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Flower’s Cove, NL.
