Please share a memory of William "Bill" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Bill (Sr) died quietly in hospital in Strathmore, AB, in the early hours of June 13, 2014. Born in Kirkland Lake, ON, August 23, 1929, to William and Eusebia (Steeles) Ramsay, he was preceded in death by them and by his loving wife Eileen Norma, sisters, Mary Deith and Norma Ramsay (Jr.), and his grand-nephew, Tyler Deith.

In 1952, Bill was sent by his employer, McNamara Construction, for a brief assignment to their project in Port aux Basques, NL, for the building of the new terminal dock where he met and fell in love with Eileen ‘Norma’ Beauchamp. Two-weeks turned into 50 years, during which, he and his wife spent their first 40 years together raising their family and managing Beauchamp Hardware. Bill was a keen participant and early Lion’s Club member and also belonged to the Cabot Masonic Lodge. He was also active in many civic pursuits over the years, from volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver, and was known to have risked his own life on more than one occasion while attempting to save others. Bill could always be counted on to help his friends and neighbours.

In 1988, he and Norma left home for Halifax where they lived for a number of years, then to Ottawa for a year, before moving to St John’s in 2000. It was there Norma died, in 2004. In the ten years since, Bill first moved back to Port aux Basques, where he enjoyed spending time with his friend, Eric Durnford, and other Mountain Hope Manor residents, especially his companion, Rose Payne, who predeceased him in 2011. He really liked being close to his great grand-daughters and sharing special occasions with them. He enjoyed summer visits with family—boating and fishing in Ontario’s Rideau Lakes spending time with his nephews and their children. In 2012,Bill moved toFort McMurray, where he enjoyed daily outings with friends at the local Bridge’s day program for seniors; then finally, failing health led him to Sagewood Seniors’ Community in Strathmore, AB,close to his son’s work in Calgary until his death last week.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Lori Ramsay Pineau (Clem), and son, Bill Ramsay, Jr. (Jackie); grandchildren Michelle (Ramsay) Sheaves (Mike), Paul Pineau, Christa, Lori, and Lisa Ramsay; great grand-daughters Summer and Brooke Sheaves; niece Christine (Andrews) Foster (Daniel); nephews Robert ‘Bob’ Beauchamp (Sharon), Bill Deith (Marlene), Andrew Deith (Heather), Ben Deith (Carol), and Jamie Deith (Lisa); many great-grand nieces and nephews across Canada and the US; and several very dear friends.

Visitation will be held at Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Channel-Port aux Basques, on Tuesday, June 23, from 2:00–4:00 and 7:00–9:00 PM, with funeral services at St. James’ Anglican Church, 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 24. Interment will follow at the Anglican cemetery at Barachois for Bill and his wife, Norma—together, as was his final wish.

Should friends so wish, a contribution may be made to the Channel-Port aux Basques Lions Club or the Alzheimers Society.
