<p align="center"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">Kevin Byrne</span></p> <p align="center"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">Corner Brook, NL </span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;"> </span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">It is with heavy hearts but with immense gratitude for a long well- lived life that the children of Kevin Byrne announce his passing at the DVA ward of the LTC in Corner Brook on February  5, 2014 at the age of 92. </span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: medium;"> Predeceased by his infant son Kevin (1964) and his wife of 49 years Audrey (nee Clarke) (2000), he leaves  behind five children:  Peter ( Joan) of Devon , Alberta; Jo-Anne ( Tom Philpott) Corner Brook; Janet (Edmund Turpin) Goose Bay; Rod ( Mary) St. John’s and Paul ( Barb Hynes) Stephenville and his cherished grandkids – Poppy’s dolls - Shelley (Wallace Saunders )  and Allison Byrne, Meaghan and Emily Philpott, Clarke and Jane Turpin, Joanna Byrne,  and Kevin and Ian Byrne; and three  great grand- children  Austin, Haley and Dylan Saunders.  He also leaves behind his only remaining sister Theresa Wall of Corner Brook and brother Jim (Marg) St. John’s as well as sisters- in- law Ula Byrne, Sheila Byrne, Myrtle Byrne and Joan Courtney.  He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews with whom he enjoyed numerous visits, humorous stories and sing songs.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">Kevin was predeceased by his parents  Joseph and Louise Byrne (nee Buckle) and  12 siblings Jack, Bernard, George, Frank, Edward, Arthur, Joseph, Gerald, Bill, and sisters Mona, Marie and special sister Florence O’Reilly. He is also predeceased by his special nephew Cyril Byrne (2006) and brothers -in –law Walter Wall, Tom Courtney, sister in law Bride (Cole) Byrne, Patricia (Fitzgerald) Byrne and brother and sister -in -law Louis and Edna Schoenthaler.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Kevin served in the RCAF from 1942-46 where he achieved the rank of Leading Aircraftman (LAC). His courage was evidenced many times highlighted by his landing in Normandy on D-Day and participation in the liberation of Holland. He was awarded  numerous stars and Medals of Commendation in recognition of his valuable contribution to the war effort. He remained a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 68 years and paraded with his comrades on Remembrance Days through out his life – his last time on  July 1, 2012 when he presented himself as Legion escort with nephew, Gerry Byrne, MP to lay the  Wreath of Remembrance on behalf of the Queen and for Canada.  </span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;">Kevin was a well-known locomotive engineer on the Newfoundland Railway from 42 years and a member of a special fraternity of men known as ‘ Railroaders’ with whom he shared his warmth of character, stories and lunch tin at every stop.  His railroading achievements and stories have been recorded in numerous books published about the railway.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Active in community life, Kevin contributed to civic affairs working as an executive member on union and Air Force associations and was involved with church activities through his strong Catholic faith. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, for his quick wit and humor which he shared freely with his friends, neighbors, and his 'own' - generations of extended Byrne family members.  God Bless ‘Uncle Kev’.  </span></span></p> <p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 8</span><sup><span style="font-size: small;">th</span></sup><span style="font-size: medium;"> at 10:30 A.M from the Cathedral of The Most Holy Redeemer, Mt. Bernard Avenue with Father Ed Terry officiating. The interment will follow at Mt. Patricia cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
