Gertrude Elizabeth McCarthy Benoit’s Cove, NL June 15, 1928 – May 24, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Gertrude Elizabeth McCarthy (nee Hickey) announce her passing on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 89 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children, Eileen Raimondo (Gino), Bridgette Compagnon (Frank), Michael (Velita), Carol Caines, Howard (Sheila), Ches (Marilyn), Mary Barnes (Eric), John (Wanda), Al (Karen), Kathy (Rob), Theresa (Glen), 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Gertrude also leaves to mourn her sisters Mary McCarthy (Rob) and Dorothy Companion, her brother Jim (Leona), sister-in-law Vera Hickey, brother-in-law John Lauretig and a large circle of relatives and friends. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Ignatius (Nick). Her parents Mary Ann and James Hickey, her infant son Ignatius, grandson Brad McCarthy. Brothers George, Jack, Nath, Leo, Martin and sister Monica Lauretig, son-in-law Gary Caines and brother-in-law Ross Companion. We wish to thank the residents and staff of the Lohnes Complex for their loving support and friendship. And we could only watch in awe and feel grateful to the team at the Palliative Care Unit, we cannot thank you enough for the wonderful care that our mother received. Family and friends may visit Fillatres Funeral Home, 218 Curling Street on Friday, May 25 between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Benoit’s Cove, with Father Jim Robertson officiating.
