Obituary of James Bertram Brake
It is with great sadness that the family of James Bertram “Jim” Brake announce his passing at the Western Long Term Care Facility on August 13, 2024 at the age of 82, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Jim passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
He leaves behind with happy memories his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis (nee Anderson), son Michael and daughter-in-law Wanda, his grandchildren, whom he adored, Alexander (Megan) and Michelle (Michael) and gramps precious great-grandchildren that always brought a sparkle to his eye and a smile, Ilsa and Caleb.
His sister Margaret Taylor, in-laws Rendell Anderson (Jean), Ivy Cassell, Belle Crocker and Eva Anderson and son-in-law Gerry Brake. Special niece Janet Pardy (David), as well as many other nephews and nieces who affectionately called him Uncle Jim.
He was predeceased by his daughters Donna (2016) and Norma (1964), parents Foster and Mae Brake, brother John, parents-in-law Lloyd and Flossie Andreson, brothers and sisters-in-law Kevin Taylor, Richard Anderson, Alvin Cassell, Abraham Crocker and Violet Leonard.
Jim, throughout his life, was very involved in his community and took great pride in helping others. He was instrumental in municipal politics, serving as Councilor and Mayor for the town of Meadows as well as Town Manager for many years. He was involved with many provincial committees and advisory groups. He volunteered his time with the Lions Club making many friends throughout the province and country. He was a volunteer firefighter, recreation committee member, church vestry member as well as being involved with many other community service groups. He was instrumental in the growth and development of his town, something he took great pride in. He was especially proud of his Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Although his disease lessened his quality of life in the past couple years, it’s the memories we will cherish. A gentle man, quiet and strong, a pillar of strength and support, always there to help, lend a hand and a smile.
A thank you to the health care “Angels” of Western Long Term Care, who provided great care and compassion to “Jimmy” during his stay. You were his adopted family, and we are so grateful for everything you did to make him happy and comfortable.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a visitation at Fillatre’s Funeral home, St. Marks Avenue on Friday, August 15th from 7PM to 9PM and Saturday, August 16th, from 2Pm to 4Pm and 7Pm to 9PM.
Please no tears or sadness, just smiles, great stories and happy memories as we celebrate the life of Jim.
