Herbert Joseph Stone
August 20, 1931 – July 24, 2024
Herbert J. Stone passed peacefully away July 24,2024, just one month shy of his 93rd birthday at Rufus Guinchard Long Term Care Health Center in Port Saunders, NL.
Herbert, born in St. Mary’s River, Labrador was the eldest of ten children born to Walter and Agnes (Neary) Stone of Henley Harbour, Labrador. At 19 Herbert left home to work, eventually putting down roots in St. Anthony. He dedicated his life to family, volunteering, St. Anthony Town Council, and his work career which took him from Boiler & Diesel Operator with Grenfell Mission (1952-1956) to Diesel Power Plant Operator with the US Air Base 921st AC&W Squadron, and finally NL Hydro where he retired as Area Superintendent in 1989. Herbert valued hard work and was quite proud to boast of never missing a day of work as well as building his first house while receiving a pay rate of $1.85/hour in 1957. He was a straight-shooting character who had plenty of stories to share and thoroughly enjoyed a new audience.
Herbert is survived by his children Michelle (Floyd), Todd (Vanessa), Ula, Donna (Dan), and their families; brothers Raymond, Roderick, Harvey; and sisters Effie and Nellie.
He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Agnes Stone, wife Netta, son Wayne, grandson Clay, sisters Margaret, Eva, Judy; and brothers Donald and Jack.
The family would like to thank all staff at Rufus Guinchard Long Term Care Health Center, Port Saunders for their amazing care, kindness, and dedication to Herbert during his stay.
At Herbert’s request, cremation has taken place with an interment to follow at a later date.
