August 27, 1940 - May 27, 2024
In the early hours of morning on May 27, 2024, the late Shirley Marie (Turnbull) Burden, of Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, passed from her earthly home into the presence of her Lord, at the age of 83 years, at the Long Term Care Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador surrounded by her family.
Shirley grew up in the St. Micheals Bay Area of Labrador, (Triangle, Newtown, Charlottetown). She was the seventh child of Barton and Rachel Turnbull. In March of 1957, she married the love of her life, Gilbert Burden, and moved to Port Hope Simpson, where they raised a beautiful family, three boys and four girls. Shirley was a quiet woman but a hard worker. She fished alongside her husband in George’s Cove, Occasional Harbour and lastly Snug Harbour, all along the Southern Labrador coast, until the cod moratorium in 1992. She loved family gatherings and could always be found in the kitchen, ensuring everyone was fed when she had company. She served her Lord faithfully and loved to be found where there was singing and worship. Her smile could brighten your day, and she loved her family and friends with her whole heart.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children; Glynes (Austin) Penney, Karen Burden, Sandra (Harrison) Campbell, Clarence (Bella) Burden, Jocelyn Hancock, Michelle (Irving) Clarke, Tony (Elsie-Lynn) Burden. Her 30 Grandchildren and 26 Great-Grandchildren and one Great-Great- Grandchild. 2 Sisters: Betty Yetman and Frances (Stewart) Burt. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Predeceased by her loving and devoted husband: Gilbert Burden (2017), Son: Whyman Burden (2016), Son-in-law: Donald Hancock (2022), her Grandson: Damien Burden (2005), Baby boy Clarke (1996), Mother and Father: Barton and Rachel Turnbull. As well as three sisters, and five brothers.
Special Thanks to the staff and friends at the Long Term Care in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. So many wonderful people who ensured Shirleys last year was filled with smiles, laughs, and love. You will always hold a special place in the hearts of her family.
