Obituary of Rodney Cumby
Rodney Arthur Cumby
August 31, 1965 – March 9, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Rodney Cumby, in Blanc Sablon, Quebec on March 9, 2024 at the age of 58. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife Leslie (nee: Webb), 3 sons Aaron, David and Michael, mother Patricia, father Art (Ruth), sister Fran (Tony), brothers Fred (Krista), Stefan (Janet), other relatives and many friends, especially the hockey community and colleagues.
Rodney was born in Carbonear, NL and grew up in Pouch Cove. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University, he moved to Halifax where he met Leslie. They returned to Rodney's hometown of Pouch Cove in 1998 where he became Town Clerk. This role ignited his passion for local government. He spent the next 24 years building a remarkable career that saw him take progressively responsible positions in several municipalities with the most recent being City Manager of Corner Brook. Rodney was an uncommon municipal leader with a deep understanding; balancing the demands of staff, council and the public, but never forgetting that he was there to help build a community. The communities that were fortunate enough to have him as a leader will benefit from his guidance for generations to come. Rodney was recognized provincially, nationally and internationally having served as President of the Provincial Association of Municipal Administrators as well as a Director on the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators. A mentor to many, his legacy will live on in the sector.
While Rodney enjoyed a stellar municipal career, all of it paled in comparison to his greatest and proudest accomplishment - his boys Aaron, David and Michael. He was their biggest fan in their many sport and artistic pursuits. They were his pride and joy, and he was so proud of the men they have become.
Rod loved his family deeply. Gatherings with parents, siblings and friends were his favorite pastime. Anyone who socialized with the Cumby family witnessed a bond of love, laughter and dedication that was unparalleled.
Rodney was a storyteller with a quick wit and joie de vivre that drew people to him. Everywhere he went, his network of friends grew as he was someone people wanted to be around. As family and friends will attest, time spend with Rodney was filled with stories, kindness, laughter and love.
No love was stronger than the love Rodney has for his wife, Leslie. She was his partner and best friend as they built their incredible life together.
In keeping with Rodney’s wishes cremation will take place. A celebration of life will take place Wednesday, March 13 at 5:00 p.m. at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Rodney's east coast family and friends on Monday, April 1st, 2024 at 3:00 pm at the Pouch Cove Lion's Club, Satellite Road, Pouch Cove.
