Obituary of Marjorie M. Greene

Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Marjorie Mary Greene of Halfway Point, Newfoundland. Marj passed away in her home during the early morning of January 15, 2022 at the age of 74.

Marj was born on July 12, 1947 in her family home in St. George’s. She was the third oldest of 9 siblings. She was predeceased by 7 of her siblings: Calvin, Gerald, Lorraine, Neil, Brendan, Brian, and Joanne. Debbie Morris is her only surviving sister.

Marj was predeceased by her loving husband, James “Jim” Greene, on September 6, 2020. Besides Jim, Marj is predeceased by her first son, Darren, during his infancy; her mom and dad, Richard and Sarah Swyers; and her mother- and father-in-law, Madeline and Chesley Greene.

Family meant everything to Marj. She would boast about her son and grandchildren to anyone who’d lend her their ears. She loved the many phone calls, and recently the FaceTime video chats, to her family in Winnipeg. In previous years, Marj would travel to see her family in Winnipeg, and her son would come home every summer to see her. Marj spent countless hours every day on the phone talking with her sister and relatives in her extended family. After Jim’s passing, she was never truly alone as she was frequently visited by her brother-in-law, Pat Byrne, and her sister-in-law, Tori. Her family and dear friends near and far from her – John and Lisa, Joy and Ron, Wanda, Patsy and Gary, Garland and Hilda, Cis, Brian and Karen, Frances and Michael – would always do check-ins and help when they could. Marj’s support circle was loving and kind to her, and in return, she’d share her food, a good jigg’s dinner, a loaf of bread, and a good hearty laugh and conversation.

Marj’s memory will be cherished by her son, Scott Greene (Annette), and their children Matthew Lavina (Jennifer), Mikayla Greene, and Matthew Held and his sister, Myla Held. Grandma Greene loved her grandchildren with a fierceness only a grandmother can know. She never forgot anyone’s birthday, and at birthdays and Christmas time, made sure there was “money in the bank” so they could go buy something special for themselves.

Besides her family in Winnipeg, she will be missed dearly by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends from all over. Marj had a place in her heart for everyone. We all wish we could have one more chat, one more hug, one more “I love you.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Satruday, July 23, 2022 at 10:30 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Benoits Cove with Father Jim Robertson officiating. The interment will follow at the Church Cemetery.
